From the first note to the percussive slap and strum, Javier Gutierrez's guitar compositions evoke images of Spanish countryside and the plaintive Moorish narratives of flamenco music. Melodic lead lines suspend themselves upon a canopy of bittersweet chord progressions, taking turns with staccato arpeggios and the irresistible rhythms of the signature flamenco strum, the rasgueado. And, while what Gutierrez does best is to follow the musical curves and turns of his gypsy muse, he does so with all the authenticity of an ageless soul in a modern time.

Hailing from Mexico City, with a background in electric rock, jazz and blues, his primary influences are much more contemporary and new world than the classical roots of Spanish guitar, yet Guiterrez effortlessly transplants moods, modes and motifs into a sonic panorama of cultures and continents.

Gutierrez picked up the guitar at the age of twelve, went on to study at the Fermatta Musical Academy in Mexico City, and voyaged to Los Angeles at the cusp of the millenium to continue studying at Musicians Institute. While there, he immersed himself in the LA band scene and spent several years playing out and teaching guitar by day. Along the way, boredom- or something close to artistic malaise- overcame him and Gutierrez rediscovered his classical guitar and a thirst for a more authentic, original expression than ever before. Launching himself headlong into the world of composition, he travelled to Seville, Spain in the summer of 2005 to study flamenco guitar at Taller Flamenco. Now, armed with a more mature and expressive artistic palate, he comes to the world with his first inspired offering, Gypsy Muse!
